A Study In Techniques

All drawings are 9″ x 12″

Drawing 1: Colored pencil on illustration paper
Drawing 2: Ink on illustration paper
Drawing 3: Graphite on illustration paper
Drawing 4: Black and white charcoal on grey toned sketch paper
Drawing 5: Three tones of sepia charcoal on tan toned sketch paper

I have used this same image to showcase various drawing techniques. Some I have known and used since my mom taught me when I was a kid. Others I have learned in art classes in college or in classes I have taken as an adult. As I develop new techniques I will continue to do new versions of this picture to showcase each new style of drawing. And I already have plans for several new drawings to add.

Sketches

Sketch 2: 11″ x 14″

Straw hat: 14″ x 11″
Charcoal on sketch paper

These sketches were all done in a drawing class I took. Each was for a “quick sketch” study. For Sketch 1, we were given 45 minutes, for Sketch 2, 10 minutes, and for the Straw hat exercise we had 30 minutes. The idea of these exercises was to get us to not only use new media in our drawings, but to also get our subjects drawn quickly without over thinking what we were doing. It really is amazing what you can do if you just “get out of the way” and let your brain do what it wants to do! In the past drawings like these would have taken me hours to do.
